You Are Not Alone!
Welcome! If you are a young person here just questioning or if you need local resources, we have
tried to provide a wide variety of helps here for you. Please look around.
If you feel you are in the wrong body, you are likely transgendered. Please check out our "What am I?" Page. You are not crazy or
stupid or retarded. You are not doing anything wrong. Nor did you do anything to cause this. Being who you are inside is never wrong.
I know this time seems difficult, as you struggle to be yourself. You may feel you could explode if you don't get to "be yourself".
Coming out to family is not easy, especially when you are not sure what you are or how they will react. Please get help from a therapist
or councilor to decide if coming out is right for you and to help you plan what to do next. Your best bet is to make a plan then slowly
progress at it. If you are of Asian descent and your family is traditional, you have quite a challenge ahead, but there are resources here
for you too.
Discovering who and what you are is a long process. At first, you may only want everyone to just let you "be" yourself without all the
pressure. Later as you decide where you fit on the gender spectrum, your feelings about yourself and what you want from others will
change. Just remember, no matter how long this process takes, you will get to spend the rest of your life being the real you!
If you decide to transition from one gender to another, things can be difficult. Transition is not easy on you or your family. Everyone
must make adjustments. Your parents thought they had a boy or a girl, only to discover that they had been wrong about what you were.
Now they have to deal with the loss of the child they thought you were and deal with the "new" you. Transition will be difficult for you
too, because you will be starting to live in a gender role that you have to learn about. You may have a lot to learn.
FIND SUPPORT
First, you need to find support for yourself. If you can find someone like you to talk to during this time, it will help a lot. You can join
My Space transgendered groups, online support groups and forums. Getting other friends and/or teachers on your side can help too. If
you have a counselor at school you trust, talk to him or her also. You can also go to a County Behavioural Health Clinic. Contact the
local GLBT organization at your school or in your city or county for help. Some have youth programs. Try not to go through this alone.
It is easy when you are young to fall into depression thinking that this will never change. But it will change. How can you cope now?
Get help, from a school counselor, or county counselor/therapist (look up your County Behavioral Health in the phone book or on line
and call them to find out how to get into the system) Finding a therapist will allow you to talk about your feelings and get some of the
pressure out. Your therapist may also help you find resources to help in your transition or help you deal with your families expectations.
Going to a mental health professional, doesn't mean you are crazy or stupid, it means you are facing problems too much for you to
handle alone. Counselors and therapists give us the opportunity to vent as well as teach us new ways to resolve problems and they direct
us to resources that can help. Facing a problem alone is a prescription for misery, possibly failure and possibly suicide. Don't struggle
alone! Many of us did that and have had to pay the price of a life of self hate and even suicide.
Terms
Counselor - Usually a professional person who gives counsel; an adviser for life issues like relationships, work, school, etc. Usually
focuses on practical resolutions to a particular problem.
Therapist - One who specializes in the provision of a particular therapy. In this case, a therapist who specializes in treating mental,
relationship, or family issues. Often focuses on the cause of the problem, aids in self discovery, teaches techniques for coping and aids
in the resolution of the problem.
Psychologist - A person trained and educated to perform psychological research, testing, and therapy. Often referred to as a "therapist".
Psychiatrist - Medical Doctor who specializes in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental and emotional disorders. They often
prescribe medications.
COMING OUT
Coming out is difficult, because your family or friends may or may not accept you. Usually Mom's accept and Dads have harder time
with this. Occasionally it will be the reverse. You never know who will accept you if you don't talk to them. Yes it is true they may
reject you, but then they may surprise you and be okay with who you are inside. Often religious families are less accepting than non
religious families.

FAMILY ACCEPTANCE
We all suffer lack of acceptance by family, friends, church or society before, during and after transition. Know that each year
transgendered people are being accepted more and more as society comes to understand us. So things should get easier with time.
GOING FORWARD WITH TRANSITION
There are no quick fixes once you decide to go forward with transition. It will take the time it takes, figure a minimum of two years, if
money is available. If not, it will be longer. If you are covered by your parents insurance and your parents are accepting, transition
should go well. If you are not covered by insurance and you are under 18, you may be able to get Medi-Cal through the local social
services office. If not, then you will have to get on County Insurance. You will probably have to go to the local County Hospital to sign
up for it. Call first to find out. County resources in your area should be in the Government pages of your phone book. You can goggle
your Counties name online too.
MAKE A PLAN
Check out our Transition Page to help you make a plan. Please use your councilor or therapist to help you make a safe and healthy plan
for transition.
LOOKING FOR LOVE
We all seek love and unconditional acceptance. We long to find that special someone who will full fill us. Someone who will love us for
who we are and accept us no matter what.
Love can be difficult for us. So many feelings, fears and questions. Am I a freak? Will someone want me the way I am? Will they
dump me if I tell them how I feel or what I am? Can I get away with not telling them what I am? Maybe all this will go away if I marry
in my birth gender. Maybe having children will make me "feel" like a should.
As a believer in God and his Creation, I believe he has prepared at least one person for us, to be our compliment, our "other half". I
suspect that many don't find the right person, but rather settle for someone, anyone. Perhaps that is partly why the reason the divorce
rate is so high. Just know that if you are rejected by someone you wanted, maybe that stopped you from making a terrible mistake and
perhaps it puts you closer to finding the right one for you. If the person who rejected you is the "right one", likely they will come back.
I trust the Creator on this one. Be patient and you should end up with the right person to love you.
