On this page you will find information and links to help you in understanding what this condition is scientifically speaking and what
we deal with the situations that life brings to us.

What is this condition?
What do researchers think Transsexualism/Gender Identity Disorder is?  One idea gaining acceptance
and scientific backing is that the brains of transsexuals are actually wired for the opposite gender.
Specifically the central part of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BSTc).  See articles on brain
differences below.

How does this condition occur?
Simply put, all fetuses start out as female.  It is an individuals genetic code that tells the fetus to become male or not.  A developing
fetus goes through two specific (sex) hormonal washes.  The first is thought to differentiate the body in accordance with the genetic
code.  The second is thought to differentiate the brain.  It is believed, that if the washes are two different hormones, or if one of the
washes is lacking, then the body and brain may be programmed oppositely, one male, the other female.  Any substance, condition or
situation that alters the hormone washes may produce a transgendered child.  Examples of things thought to contribute to hormone
disturbances in fetuses include, stress, drugs, environmental hormones and medical conditions.

Drug Influences
DES, Definition of - online
DES - Diethylstilbestrol, the earliest synthetic (man-made) form of a hormone in the estrogen class.  DES was once widely prescribed
to prevent miscarriages and premature births. Its usage was standard practice in the 1950s and 1960s. Millions of women received
the drug.  Girls whose mothers were given DES during pregnancy ("DES daughters") were discovered to be at increased risk
for being born with malformations of the reproductive organs and to face elevated rates of infertility and miscarriages themselves.

that this condition is "real" and not a mental illness, a phase or a fad.
